Care
Caring for your wooden fountain pen is key to ensuring its longevity and preserving its beauty. Wooden fountain pens are unique and sensitive to external conditions, so it is important to follow certain rules.
Important note:
The wood used is not stabilized (impregnated with resin). The reason is that in the case of pens, I am not a supporter of this technology. I prefer naturalness so that the wood can breathe and provide the pen owner with a unique tactile experience. For the wood to maintain its beautiful appearance and better resistant wear, it is coated with linseed oil, which gives it a beautiful shine and provides sufficient protection.
Hairline cracks, pores and other natural surface features typical of wood may occur on the wood, but they are not a reason for a complaint.
Here are some tips on how to properly care for such a pen:
Maintenance of the wooden surface
- Regular cleaning: Gently wipe the wooden surface with a soft cloth to remove dust and grease. If the pen is very dirty, you can use a slightly damp cloth, but do not allow the wood to soak in water.
- Use of wood oil: To keep the wood beautiful and protect it from drying out, you can gently treat it once in a while with linseed oil intended for wooden surfaces. Paint the pen, let it act for 20 minutes and then polish it with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals.
Protect the pen from extreme conditions
- Avoid moisture: A wooden pen can absorb moisture and become deformed. Therefore, do not store it in damp places or near water.
- Protect it from temperature changes: Wood can react to large temperature fluctuations - it can shrink or expand. Do not carry the pen in a hot car or in very cold places.
- Do not expose it to direct sunlight: Ultraviolet rays can cause the wood to fade or change color over time.
Proper storage
- Keep it in a case: It is ideal to store the pen in a protective case to protect it from scratches and dust.
- Store it horizontally: Many people recommend storing a fountain pen horizontally to prevent ink from bleeding or the nib from drying out.
Care of the pen mechanism
- Clean the nib and refill regularly: Emptying and rinsing the pen refill (for example with clean water) is important to prevent dried ink from accumulating.
- Use quality ink: Cheap ink can contain sediments and impurities that cause deposits in the mechanism. It is recommended to use only the ink recommended by the pen manufacturer.
Pen handling
- Don't use too much force: When writing, don't press too hard on the tip of the pen to avoid damaging it.
- Beware of drops: The wood is susceptible to impacts and can be damaged or cracked if the pen is dropped on a hard surface.
Regular inspection
- If you notice any damage to the wooden surface or problems with the mechanism, it is a good idea to take the pen to an expert or the manufacturer for repair.
Avoid chemicals
- Cleaning agents, alcohol or other chemicals can damage the surface of the wood and its natural appearance.
If you take care of your wooden fountain pen regularly and with love, it will serve you for many years and become an elegant and functional accessory for everyday writing. 😊
